NFL Preseason Week 3 Fantasy Summary

Published on August 24, 2014, by in NFL.

Don’t have time to watch every preseason match, let alone read the game recaps?

Here are brief game-by-game notes on fantasy relevant players for the 14 Saturday Preseason Week 3 games, typically the last chance for starters to show their stuff before the season starts.

Only players that in my opinion have a fantasy stock sensitive to their performance in the preseason are mentioned here (Top tier QB’s, most top two rounds won’t be listed here for brevity).

A “+” before the name indicates the player has improved their fantasy value, and “-” denotes a step back.

Patriots 30, Panthers 7

– Cam Newton: 8-12 88yds, 3 rushes 12yds
+ Kelvin Benjamin: 6 tgt 5 rec 47yds
Greg Olsen: 4 tgt 2 rec 41yds

Danny Amendola: 2 tgt 2 rec 13yds
Julian Edelman: 8 tgt 8 rec 99yds
Kenbrell Thompkins: 3 tgt 2 rec 35yds
Brandon Lafell: 5 tgt 2 rec 14yds
Shane Vereen: 6-18yds, 5 rec 57yds 2 TD

Vereen & Edelman can win your league.
Kelvin Benjamin is the real deal, now if only Cam can get it going.

Giants 35, Jets 24

– Eli Manning: 12-21 139yd TD
Victor Cruz: 7 tgt 4 rec 61yds
+ Rashad Jennings: 13-67yds, 1 rec 7yds
Mario Manningham: 1 tgt 1 rec 5 yds
Rueben Randle: 4 tgt 2 rec 41yd TD

Geno Smith: 9-14 137yd TD
Eric Decker: 5 tgt 3 rec 34yds
+ Chris Ivory: 6-50yds, 1 rec 23yds
Chris Johnson: 9-42yds, 2 rec 35yds

Eli struggles again. Jennings looks capable.
Geno handled himself OK. Looking like a Running Back by Committee in New York

Packers 31, Raiders 21

Jordy Nelson: 6 (2 end zone)
– Randall Cobb: 3 targets 0 rec, drop
Jarrett Boykin: 2 targets 0 rec
+ Eddie Lacy: 6-36yds TD
Richard Rodgers: 3 targets 2 rec 40yds
– Davante Adams: 1 target, drop

– Matt Schaub: 13-27 100yds FumL
– James Jones: 10 targets 4 rec 36yd
Denarius Moore: 3 targets 2 rec 46yd
+ Maurice Jones-Drew: 3-45yds TD

Cobb had as terrible a game as Lacy had a dominant one.
Schaub was horrific. Jones-Drew broke a great run.

Seahawks 34, Bears 6

+ Russell Wilson: 15-20 202yd 2TD, 4 rushes 23yds 1TD
+ Percy Harvin: 3 rec 61yd

Joique Bell: 7-24yds, 1 rec 1yd
Golden Tate: 4 tgt 3 rec 36yd
Ryan Broyles: 3 tgt 3 rec 44yd

Stafford was inaccurate but should be OK with his improved receiving corps. Bush had jump.
Bortles looks good again, and Hurns has another solid outing and is worth a late round flyer.

Buccaneers 27, Bills 14

Sammy Watkins: sat out, minor injury
Scott Chandler: 4 tgt, 3 rec 40yds
CJ Spiller: 9-36yds FumL, 3 rec 23yd
Fred Jackson: 5-15yds TD, 4 rec 23yd
Bryce Brown: 2-24yds, 1 rec 18yd
Receivers didn’t do anything special

+ Josh McCown: 13-16 112yd TD INT, 2 rushes 21yds
+ Doug Martin: 12-38yds TD, 2 rec 27yds
+ Mike Evans: 4 tgt 3 rec 44 yds TD
+ Vincent Jackson: 5 tgt 43yds

McCown can handle this offense. Martin is poised for a big bounce back season. Evans will be good for a long time.

Dolphins 25, Cowboys 20

– Romo: 10-18, 87yds
Lance Dunbar: 4 rushes 18yds, 1 rec 17yd
Dez Bryant: 5 tgt, 4 rec 32yds

Lamar Miller: 7-34yds, 2 rec 3yds
– Charles Clay: 1 tgt, 1 rec 18yd
Brian Hartline: 5 tgt, 3 rec 25yd

Moreno & Wallace played very well. Romo was erratic.

Eagles 31, Steelers 21

Ben Roethlisberger: 15-24 157yds TD INT
Le’Veon Bell: 9-23yds, 1 rec 3yds
LeGarrette Blount: 7-32yds, 3 rec 14yds
Antonio Brown: 5 tgt 3 rec 59yds

Riley Cooper: 5 tgt 2 rec 25yds
Zach Ertz: 2 tgt 2 rec 24yds

LeSean McCoy: 4-24yds, 2 rec 26yds TD (left w/ injured thumb)

Keep an eye on Maclin’s knee. Foles started slow but finished strong. Sproles looked good.

+ Devin Hester: 5 tgt 4 rec 56yds TD
+ Roddy White: 4 tgt 3 rec 34yds

+ Jake Locker: 12-17 188yds TD
Bishop Sankey: 16-44yds TD
Shonn Greene: 6-15yds
Justin Hunter: 3 tgt 3 rec 48yds

Locker has a solid performance. Hester’s first real chance to shine, and he did. Could be an interesting flyer.

Redskins 17, Ravens 23

Joe Flacco: 16-23 180yds TD
– Bernard Pierce: 4 rushes -3yds (left w/ concussion)
+ Steve Smith Sr: 7 tgt 6 rec 80yds TD

Dennis Pitta: 4 tgt 2 rec 16yds

– Robert Griffin III: 5-8 23yds INT
Roy Helu: 7-30yds
Alfred Morris: 6-29yds

Pierce’s injury could vault Ray Rice up again. Rice’s value has dropped too much lately anyways. Steve Smith looked great. Redskins receivers did nothing of note, give them all a minus due to RGIII’s play.

Saints 23, Colts 17

+ Mark Ingram: 8-46yds
+ Pierre Thomas: 3-13yds, 4 rec 66 yds
– Kenny Stills: 1 tgt, 1 big drop

Brandon Cooks: Did not play, stomach virus

– Ahmad Bradshaw: 3-2 yds, 1 catch 11yd
Hakeem Nicks: 2 tgt 2 rec 18yds

Colts did not look sharp, but Luck & Co will be fine.

Knile Davis: 12-27yds, 2 rec 37yds
+ Travis Kelce: 6 tgt 4 rec 49yds

Matt Cassel: 9-17 152yds TD INT
+ Teddy Bridgewater: 4-7 40yds 2TD
Cordarrelle Patterson: 5 tgt 3 rec 71yds
Kyle Rudolph: 3 tgt 2 rec 38yds

Another solid outing for Travis Kelce, Bridgewater & Cordarelle Patterson.

Rams 33, Browns 14

Sam Bradford: 4-9 77yds (left w/ same bad knee)
+ Kenny Britt: 2 rec 68yds (if Bradford is OK)

– Ben Tate: 3-5yds
Andrew Hawkins: 5 tgt 5 rec 36yds TD
Jordan Cameron: 2 tgt 2 rec 18yds
Miles Austin: 6 tgt 2 rec 23yds

If Bradford’s injury is serious, it could be another long season for Rams fans.

Texans 18, Broncos 17

Ryan Fitzpatrick: 10-17 80yds
+ Ryan Griffin: 5 tgt 5 rec 71yds TD

Montee Ball: 4-13yds, 4 rec 21yd
+ Emmanuel Sanders: 8 tgt 5 rec 128yd 2TD

Welker’s injury is a big concern.

Sunday’s games will come in a later post. Target stats are from Yahoo! Sports.
